Description
Warning: These coils require significantly less “Dwell” (charging) time than standard coils – running these coils on a stock ECU, or where Dwell time has not been modified, could cause the coils to overheat & shorten life, or pre-ignite, causing engine damage.
Therefore, these are recommended for use with an aftermarket ECU only, where it is substantially easier to adjust Dwell times.
Ordering Information
Please note that this product is manufactured upon request, from the date of order it may take up to 28 days to be despatched. This covers assembly and thorough testing before shipping.
Introduction
A complete kit to upgrade the old, tired, worn out coil packs on your 8th generation Mitsubishi Galant/Legnum VR-4, using Audi “R8” style individual coil packs.
Also fitted to a number of other Audi vehicles, such as the B8 S4.
The coils for the rear bank will have had a small amount filed away, so that they sit fully down into the spark plug tubes in the rear cam cover, as such, we cannot offer a warranty on these coils. As the coils sit slightly higher than standard in the front bank, they come pre-installed with a 3D printed sleeve, which will help reduce¹ water entering the spark plug tube, such as when cleaning the engine.
Also, due to the coils sitting higher than standard, the engine cover will not fit with these coils.
We only use and supply geniune NGK coils – there are many others out there which claim to be compatible, but they vary greatly in quality, and we believe that there are some things where savings can be made, but for critical engine operation such as ignition coils, the relatively minor price difference is not worth the risk.
¹ excessive water at high pressures and angles may still make it past the sleeve, and into the spark plug tube if not careful.
Installation
Simply remove your existing coilpacks and plug leads, and install this simple kit.
Contains:
- 6x genuine NGK coilpacks
- 3x 3D printed sleeves
- wiring harness, with integrated “Ignition Failure Sensor” delete
Below are the suggested Dwell times for Link ECU:
We strongly recommend that the Dwell times for factory ignition coils are not used with these NGK coils – whilst they may appear to run with a factory ECU on standard settings, the charging time will be nearly double, which will draw substantially more current through the wiring, generating more heat in both the wiring and coils, and may in some circumstances fire prematurely – potentially causing the ignition timing to be advanced, sparking the air/fuel mixture too soon, causing substantial engine damage.
Here comes the science bit
Below is an oscilloscope trace of the two different coils – the Audi ones supplied in this kit, and the OEM coils.
One photo is overlaid on the other, but are both scaled to the same – the horizontal divisions are every 1 millisecond (1/1000th of a second), the vertical divisions are 2 amps of current. These are both taken at idle, so there is maximum duration between ignition events, and there is the least “load” on the ignition system.
The circled areas are the “knee” – this is where the coils have finished charging, and any extra current drawn is just being converted to heat within the coil as it tries to find somewhere for this extra power to go. The Audi coil finishes charging here at about 1.3ms, the OEM about 3.4ms. Both take about the same amount of current draw at this point – around 8A. The OEM coil continues to draw up to about 10A, whereas the Audi coil continues to draw more and more power, hitting a peak of nearly 16A.
Remember – there’s only a single OEM coil, but there’s 2 Audi coils drawing power at the same time – so this will be a total draw of 32A across wiring designed to take only 10A!
You may find many stories of people using similar Audi coils on a variety of cars without adjusting dwell – but now you know why we recommend that you don’t!
Warranty
All our products are supplied with a 12 month warranty against manufacturing defects only. This applied to the wiring loom, but as the coils are modified, we cannot warranty the coils. It is your responsibility to make sure this product is suitable for your requirements and used in accordance with guidelines and local law requirements.
